Titans fall to Steelhawks in defensive battle
Lehigh Valley, PA-The Cedar Rapids Titans fell to the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks in a defensive game 25-19 on Saturday night at Stabler Arena.
This was the second matchup between the two teams this season. In the first game the Cedar Rapids Titans defeated the Steelhawks 32-13 en route to the Titans’ first ever IFL victory. Saturday night’s game was a very similar defensive battle as it was the lowest scoring game of the 2012 IFL season.
The Titans got off to an early lead towards to the end of the first quarter as Defensive Lineman Xzavie Jackson blocked a Steelhawks field goal and Vernard Wilkins recovered it in the endzone to give the Titans an early 7-0 lead.
The Steelhawks responded in the second quarter as QB Bryan Randall found Week 7 IFL Offensive Player of the Week Irani DeAraujo in the back of the endzone for a six-yard touchdown. The Titans and the Steelhawks went into halftime tied at 7. It was the lowest scoring first half in IFL history.
Both offenses became a little more active in the second half. The Titans started off the third quarter behind the strength of back –to –back touchdowns. Titans WR Everett Roberts scored the Titans only offensive touchdown of the night as he burst a long run past the stingy Steelhawks defense. On the following Steelhawks possession RB Isiejah Allen fumbled the ball and DL Xzavie Jackson returned the fumble 25 yards for a TD. The Titans took the lead 19-7.
The Titans could not hold on though as they were outscored 17-0 over the last 23 minutes. Lehigh Valley RB Isiejah Allen scored both of the Steelhawks touchdowns as he ran for a 39-yard score and then caught an 8-yard TD. The Steelhawks then added a Paul Stolz 21-yard field goal with 5:40 remaining in the game to secure a Steelhawks victory 25-19.
Offensive woes continue to hound the Titans. Cedar Rapids has scored only five offensive touchdowns over the past two games. The Titans defense has tried to pick up the slack as they have quickly developed into the most prolific scoring defense in the IFL. The defense has scored five touchdowns in the past two games. In the Week 7 matchup with the Green Bay Blizzard the Titans defense returned three interceptions for TDs. In Saturday night’s game vs. the Steelhawks the Titans added two more scores.
Titans QB Willie Copeland completed 18 of 34 passes for 127 yards and one INT. WR Everett Robert led the Titans in both rushing and receiving yards. He finished the game with 50 rushing yards and one TD and 3 catches for 38 yards.
The Cedar Rapids Titans drop to 2-4 on the season and are on the franchise’s first ever-losing streak. The Steelhawks move to 4-3 on the season.
The Titans will return to the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena next Saturday April 21 as they take on the Omaha Beef. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
